From Miss Mabel of Reading Roots
Learning to read should be fun
The first comics your child can read on their own
I taught reading for 15 years, and the children who flew were the ones having fun.
So we made Phonics Comics!
Funny adventures with a little alien called Yap. Every word uses sounds your child knows so they can read the whole story by themselves.

Comics help you learn to read
WHAT'S THE STORY?
A tiny alien who crash landed on earth
The first Phonics Comics follow Yap as they explore earth and meet its inhabitants. Starting with a crash landing, and moving swiftly on to chat-hats and wish-fish.
Each comic is very carefully written to introduce just one new sound + a tricky word.
The comics follow the order of teaching inside The Phonics App, so you'll feel right at home.
AVAILABLE NOW FOR EVERYONE
Print at home
We want to make Phonics Comics available to everyone around the world using The Phonics App.
That's over 500,000 people in every corner of the globe. And we want to get comics into your hands right now, not in a year's time.
So, we have decided to make Phonics Comics as print-at-home downloadable comics.
We've put in the same love, care, craft and phonics know-how as a printed book. But there's no postage. No shop visits. No delivery time.
Just print and fold it yourself into a zine, or view as panels on A4 or even a screen.
PERFECT PARTNER
Made to work with The Phonics App
The comics follow exactly the same order as The Phonics App. So now as soon as you've learned a sound, you have a comic to read to practise. Every new comic only contains the new sound + the sounds that have come before it in the app.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What age are the comics for?
They're written for children learning to read with phonics β typically around ages 4β5, but the right comic depends on the sounds your child knows, not their age.
My child can already read confidently, will they enjoy them?
These comics are specifically for learning to read. If you child can already read well, check out our list of recommended comics.
Is The Phonics App required?
No. The comics pair perfectly with the app, but they work just as well on their own if you are at the right level.
Can the comics be read on a tablet?
Yes β the PDFs look great on a tablet. Most families print them too, because children love holding (and keeping) their own comic.
Is a colour printer required?
No. We have a specially created black and white version with improved contrast. You can select which version to download after purchase, and download a different version at a later time.
What paper size should I use?
Everything is designed for standard A4 paper or US Letter paper. If you're printing the folding Zine version make sure you print at 100% size so the folds work correctly.
Can teachers use them?
The standard licence covers one household. If you'd like to use Yap in a classroom, get in touch.
How are files delivered?
Immediately after purchase you'll be able to download the comics in the format of your choice.
What happens if I lose my comic?
You can recover your purchase any time from the recover page using the email address you bought with and the code you receive after buying.
Go to the Recover Purchases page
Are future comics included?
We are writing more comics right now. The complete set will be over 40 comics long, one for every digraph. New comics will be sold in sets as we create them.
